Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Statistics, Programme Implementation & Planning Rao Inderjit Singh was responding to a query raised by Amar Singh during Question Hour in the Rajya Sabha, asking for the government’s reaction to 7.8 per cent youth being unemployed.The minister said that previously, the survey used to be conducted every five years, but in 2016- 2017, the government felt that “five years becomes too long a period”. The government felt that it would be better if it was conducted every year, he told the House.

Flood continues to pile agony on people of Assam

The flood situation in Assam remained grim on Friday as 11 more people died taking the toll to 47, while 48.87 lakh people were affected in 27 of the 33 districts. A total of 1.79 lakh hectare agricultural land was submerged and around 90 per cent of rhino habitats -- the Kaziranga National Park and the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary -- are under water, officials said. Of the 11 deaths, five were reported from Dhubri district and three each from Barpeta and Morigaon, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said.

The flood situation in Bihar remained grim Friday with the death of 14 people, taking the toll to 92, as around 67 lakh people were affected in 12 districts of the state, officials said. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar launched a drive under which Rs 181 crore was disbursed among the affected people through direct cash transfer and each of the flood-hit family got Rs 6,000. The death toll, which stood at 78 on Thursday, included 27 from Sitamarhi, the district worst affected by floods which hit the state in the wake of torrential rains in catchment areas of Nepal last week.

9 students die after car collided with a truck on Pune-Solapur highway

9 students in a car, died in a collision with a truck on Pune-Solapur highway near Kadamwak Wasti village in Pune, late last night. All the deceased were residents of Yavat village of Pune. All the deceased in the accident were all college students, who had gone to visit Raigarh from Pune. The students were returning to Pune at the time of the accident.The driver had reportedly lost control of the vehicle after which it rammed into a track before hitting a divider.
